Conversation to save a life
Published on 22/2/2012 by Josephine Lim

Have you ever wondered where you would want your organs to go to when you die?

This week focuses on raising awareness for organ and tissue donation and creating discussion on the topic.

But, DonateLife Week 2012 is also about showcasing the successes of transplantation, the appreciation for life and knowing the wishes of our loved ones when it comes to organ donation.

Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Ageing Catherine King highlights the need for young people to communicate about organ donations with their family members, upon releasing the research by the Organ and Tissue Authority.

The research showed 40 per cent of young Australians (aged 18-29) are concerned their family would not want them to become an organ and tissue donor.

It was also found that up to 84 per cent of young adults find the chance to save a life the key motivation to become a donor.

"DonateLife Week provides an opportunity for young adults, and for all Australians, to sit down and talk openly about their wishes regarding organ and tissue donation,” Ms King said.

“Every family needs to ask and know each other's donation wishes because donation will not proceed without the family's confirmation of the deceased's wishes.”

This means that every conversation about organ and tissue donation could save a life one day.

On a DonateLife video sisters Melanie, Chloe and Hayley share their experiences from when their brother Mitchell became an organ donor after being involvedin a fatal crash, saving the lives of four others.

"I know it is a difficult subject and one that most parents or kids don't want to discuss, but it is so important for young Australians to ask and know the wishes of their loved ones and friends,” Melanie said.

”We urge people to have the discussion today – with your parents, your friends, your family and your kids.”

DonateLife will be holding information stalls in malls, universities and hospitals across Australia this week.
